2017 Resolutions

2017 Resolutions

I’m going to be honest – I’ve never been a big proponent or advocate for New Year’s resolutions. I think the last time I made resolutions was back in middle school, and was probably an assignment. I soon realized it was kind of pointless to make them. Or maybe I was lazy and didn’t want to bother! Instead of having resolutions each year, I come up with a vague list of goals or things I want to accomplish. My reasoning for this is things change, goals change, and dreams change. I haven’t written these down in a while, but figure 2017 would be a good place to start, and you guys can hold me accountable!

Be healthier with the mind and body

I’ve never been a health junkie – I’m a chocoholic, I like to sit in bed for an entire day, and sometimes my only form of exercise is walking to the car. I have days where I feel gross and fat, and I have days where I feel skinny and beautiful. I want more of those skinny and beautiful days. I plan on eating more fruits and veggies, taking stairs instead of the elevator, and getting more outdoor air. I also plan on getting enough sleep and drinking enough fluids – carrying a water bottle is high on my list. It’s not about the number on the scale (which I haven’t checked in over a year) but rather how I feel in my own skin.

Travel and explore more

This is a big goal of mine for 2017. I last traveled abroad in 2011, and that was to study abroad in Hong Kong. That’s close to SIX years since I’ve left the country. This is definitely not what I had envisioned after leaving Hong Kong in 2011. 2017 is going to be the year this changes. I’ll already have accomplished this goal with a trip to Hong Kong and a school trip to Brazil in March. Also top of the list is Iceland – a five hour flight from Boston and relatively cheap. I also want to explore US cities such as Austin, Portland and Nashville – all doable with my four day weekends. While in New England, I hope to do more day trips to historical museums and sites, something I love to do.

Get an internship

I have two semester left of my MBA program, and I plan on doing a full-time internship this summer. I really want to do the internship abroad – whether in Hong Kong or somewhere new and different. I’ve toyed with the idea of living abroad for a year plus, and I think doing a three month internship this summer would be a good test. I also want to do an internship in my MBA concentration – supply chain management. This will allow me to be certain of my career choice.

Be my own boss

This goal is contradictory to the previous one, but I want to be able to be my own boss when it comes to a career and work. Don’t get me wrong, I love to work and feel as if I have a purpose and contributing to society, but I want to be able to do so on my own terms and on my own timetable. I want to have the flexibility and the pride ownership brings. I will do this in a few different ways: Register my business and gain traction with some sales; expand my freelance bookkeeping client base; and explore other options to make an income. This is probably the scariest goal, because I’ve had this thought for the past few years but this is the first time I am voicing it aloud.

Above all else, be ME

Confidence in myself is something I’ve struggled with immensely in the past, and its finally safe to say I have the confidence level I need to be comfortable in my own skin. I’ve always had strong values related to family, friendships, and me as a person, and the confidence I have in myself allows me to stay true to those values. I want to continue staying true to those values, and want to invest time and love in family relationships and friendships. I also hope to be the kindest, most generous and welcoming person to anyone I come across, whether at home or abroad. I love to meet people and get to know them, and I find that 9 times out of 10 if you show someone kindness and respect the same will be reciprocated.

My 2017 goals are not goals I expect to achieve by the end of the year, but ones I hope to be closer to achieving. You only get one life to live, and I hope to take full advantage of all the opportunities which come my way.  2017 – here’s to a great start to the New Year, and hopefully the start to an amazing year!

What are your 2017 goals or resolutions and how do you plan to achieve them?
